Draft reaches and steals

Sporting News, The,  May 6, 2005

REACH: Thomas Davis, SS, Panthers (1st round, No. 14 overall). Carolina drafted Davis as a outside linebacker, a position he has never played, and there are concerns about his football instincts. The Panthers need help now, but Davis will need time to develop.

STEAL: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers (1st, No. 24). Rodgers was a serious candidate for the top overall pick, and his draft-day tumble was more a result of the immediate needs of teams selecting in the top 23 of this draft than concern about his ability. Rodgers now is the heir apparent to Brett Favre.

REACH: Lofa Tatupu, ILB, Seahawks (2nd, No. 45). Seattle traded up to get Tatupu, who was rated as a fifth-rounder on many boards and no higher than a fourth-rounder on most others.

STEAL: Shaun Cody, DE, Lions (2nd, No. 37). It was a shock when the Eagles passed on Cody and selected Mike Patterson, Cody's undersized and less heralded linemate at Southern California. The versatile Cody will play right away in the Lions' line rotation and will be a longtime starter.

REACH: The Eagles' entire draft, starting with their first three picks-DT Patterson (1st, No. 31), WR Reggie Brown (2nd, No. 35) and OLB Matt McCoy (2nd, No. 63).The combination of these three picks, all made at least one selection earlier than was necessary in the Eagles' draft order, cost the team at least one solid first-day pick.

STEAL: Darryl Blackstock, OLB, Cardinals (3rd, No. 95). Blackstock's slide almost out of Day 1 was one of the mysteries of this draft. The fact is, he will fill a first-round need as a third-round selection.--War Room scouts
