Big 12

Sporting News, The,  Nov 16, 1998  by Kurt Caywood,  Kirk Bohls

NORTH DIVISION

BIG GAME: Nebraska with two losses is still Nebraska, and this is the week Kansas State has been waiting for. The Wildcats seem to have everything going for them--incentive, talent and the home-field advantage. Now all they have to do is overcome the Nebraska aura--and a 29-game losing streak against the Cornhuskers.

LOOKING AHEAD: Nebraska might not be Kansas State's biggest roadblock in a bid for the national championship. Looming a week after the Huskers is a trip to Missouri.... Colorado, having lost three of its last four games, is 6-3, with Iowa State and a trip to Nebraska remaining. A midlevel bowl appears likely.

CAMPUS STROLL: QB Corby Jones finally appears recovered from the sprained toe that has hampered him for half of the season. Jones rushed 19 times for 108 yards and completed 10-of-18 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in Missouri's 38-14 victory over Colorado.... Sophomore Ben Kelly broke the Colorado career record for kickoff-return yardage with 1,251. M.J. Nelson held the previous mark of 1,198.... With new starting RB Dan Alexander rushing 22 times for 110 yards and redshirt freshman QB Eric Crouch adding 91 of his own, Nebraska really didn't need any assistance. But Iowa State QB Todd Bandhauer threw three interceptions in the Cyclones' 42-7 loss to the Cornhuskers.

SOUTH DIVISION

BIG GAME: Missouri, rejuvenated offensively, returns to College Station, where the Tigers were blitzed, 73-0, by Texas A&M in 1993. Mizzou is 0-4 against the Aggies and has been shut out in three of the games. The Tigers have won five of their last six, but they'll have to go after A&M with the improved passing attack they showed against the Buffaloes. Jones and company will be facing a gritty Aggies defense that is allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards per game.

LOOKING AHEAD: Ricky Williams meets Ricky Williams in a battle that features two of the country's top five rushers. Texas and Williams meet Texas Tech and Williams in Lubbock, where the teams have split their last six games. Tech's Ricky out-gained Texas' Ricky, 131 yards to 80, in the Red Raiders' 24-10 win last season. The Longhorns' Williams, the nation's leading rasher, was held under 100 yards (90) for the second time all season last Saturday by Oklahoma State, but he scored two touchdowns. He needs 204 yards to break Tony Dorsett's Division I career rushing mark.

CAMPUS STROLL: Texas A&M held Oklahoma to a season--low 124 yards and five first downs, and RB De'Mond Parker was limited to 13 yards on 14 carries.... Oklahoma State fell out of bowl contention and has lost five of its last six games, but the Cowboys should get well against a Southwestern Louisiana team that is 1-8. In its loss to Texas, OSU got inspired play from QB Tony Lindsay and redshirt freshman TE Marcellus Rivers, who combined for a 78-yard TD that was the school's longest in six seasons.
