Pac-10

Sporting News, The,  Nov 16, 1998  by Bob Clark

BIG GAME: UCLA is at Washington in a game that could, at the least, lock up a Rose Bowl berth for the Bruins should they extend the nation's longest winning streak to 19 games. The Brains handed Washington a 52-28 defeat last season, but points may be more difficult to score on a November day on the shores of Lake Washington. In the last four weeks, the Brains have rallied to beat Oregon in overtime, used a pair of goal-line stands to hold off California, forced and recovered a Stanford fumble in the end zone to preserve a 28-24 win and twice came from behind in the second half at Oregon State before beating the Beavers, 41-34, on a 61-yard touchdown pass in the final 20 seconds.

LOOKING AHEAD: Arizona State, which has come to life with three straight wins to put itself on the verge of being bowl eligible at 5-4, travels to Oregon. The Sun Devils am the only Pac-10 team the Ducks haven't beaten since Mike Bellotti became Oregon's coach in 1995, and the past two games have been 48-27 and 52-31 blowouts by ASU. The Sun Devils are winning mostly bemuse of their offense, which has scored 137 points in the last three games, despite TB J.R. Redmond missing two of those games with an ankle injury and three different quarterbacks running the offense.... Arizona, which has given up only three touchdowns and 24 points in its last four games, is at California, which had a defense to match the Wildcats until Arizona State overpowered the Bears, 55-22. Four Cal defensive linemen suffered leg injuries that could keep them out against Arizona.... Washington State and Stanford play Saturday, and each is looking to end a six-game losing streak.

CAMPUS STROLL: There never was much question that Arizona's Chris McAlister was the best athlete in the conference. But for confirmation, his 60-yard interception return for a touchdown against Washington State made him only the fifth player in Division I to return a kickoff, punt and interception for a touchdown in the same season.... Lost in the wreckage of Washington State's offense has been the play of TB Kevin Brown, who has 279 yards rushing over the past two weeks and 759 this season. Now he gets to run against Stanford, the conference's worst run defense, giving up 204.9 rushing yards per game. ... California's Dameane Douglas has 81 receptions, only nine short of matching the conference record of 90 set by USC's Keyshawn Johnson in 1995. But this might not be the week to break it with Arizona likely to use McAlister one-on-one against Douglas.... UCLA is 8-0 for the first time since 1954, and Arizona is 9-1 for only the second time in school history, but at the other end of the spectrum is Oregon State. The Beavers are 4-6 and assured of a 28th consecutive losing season. Oregon State came up short in a pair of one-point losses preceding last week's 41-34 heartbreaking loss to UCLA, which had to rally twice in the second half.
