Big 12

Sporting News, The,  Nov 9, 1998

NORTH DIVISION

BIG GAME: Colorado, which made Kansas RB David Winbush look like Barry Sanders two weeks ago in a 33-17 upset loss, had a week off to heal and steel itself for a trip to Columbia, where it will face Missouri and TB Devin West, the nation's third-leading rusher. The Tigers are coming off a 28-26 victory at Texas Tech; West rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns against the Red Raiders.

LOOKING AHEAD: Nebraska travels to Iowa State. Until earlier this season at Texas A&M, Ames was the scene of the Cornhuskers' last conference loss, a 19-10 defeat in 1992. Until this year, that also was the last season in which Nebraska lost more than one game.... Kansas will finish the season with sophomore walk-on Jay Alexander at quarterback. Junior starter Zac Wegner suffered his second concussion in two weeks last Saturday against K-State and is out for the season.

CAMPUS STROLL: Iowa State, which earlier this season snapped an 0-30-1 streak on the road when it beat Iowa, was 1:12 from tripping Oklahoma in Norman when redshirt freshman Jake Sills threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Gerald Williams to give the Sooners a 17-14 win. Iowa State QB Todd Bandhauer was intercepted twice, both times by Corey Ivy in the Oklahoma end zone.... Kansas State's sixth straight win over Kansas was by 48 points, the largest margin in the 97-year history of the series. And the Jayhawks' 44 yards of total offense was the lowest total in the program's 109-year history.... Kansas State's Martin Gramatica kicked a school-record four field goals in the victory over the Jayhawks. But Gramatica, who earlier this season hit a 65-yarder--an NCAA record without a tee-missed from 60 and 40. -- Kurt Caywood

SOUTH DIVISION

BIG GAME: Streaking Texas stunned Nebraska and this week tackles inconsistent Oklahoma State in one of the conference's weirdest series. The Longhorns won, 71-14, in Austin in 1996, and the Cowboys won, 42-16, in Stillwater last season--an 83-point turnaround.

LOOKING AHEAD: Texas A&M (8-1) puts its eight-game line in its next-to-last home game at Kyle Field, but the Aggies may have to rely on backup QB Branndon Stewart against Oklahoma. Stewart replaced the injured Randy McCown (shoulder) last Saturday threw a touchdown on his first pass against Oklahoma State. Texas A&M freshman Ja'Mar Toombs turned in his second 100-yard rushing performance of the season. Toombs carded the load on offense for the Aggies after Dante Hall left with a shoulder injury. The Aggies have won three straight against Oklahoma (2-5), outsourcing the Sooners, 120-37, although the 16-game series stands at 8-8.

CAMPUS STROLL: Texas Tech (6-3) dropped its third straight game to a ranked opponent after starting 6-0. With the loss at home to Missouri, the Red Raiders have lost three games by a total of 11 points and are idle before finishing with a home game against the Longhorns and a road trip to Oklahoma.... Texas (6-2) has won five straight games to reach the bowl-minimum number of victories and can now claim consecutive wins over Nebraska after handing the Cornhuskers their first home loss in 48 games. The last team to beat Nebraska in Lincoln was co-national champion Washington in 1991, and the last conference team to knock off the Cornhuskers there was co-national champion Colorado in 1990.... Oklahoma State (3-5) totaled only six first downs and 172 yards against Texas A&M. The Cowboys now must win out against Texas, Southwestern Louisiana and Baylor to meet the minimum number of victories to qualify for a bowl.... Despite the Sooners' win over Iowa State to snap a five-game losing streak, the line to succeed Oklahoma coach John Blake is forming. Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz and Tulane's Tommy Bowden are considered the top candidates. -- Kirk Bohls
