BIG GAME: The only conference matchup between teams with winning records is Washington (5-3) at Oregon (6-2), but those are two teams that lost by a combined 58 points last weekend. The game will have bowl implications and is a heated rivalry that has turned Oregon's way in recent years. After losing 17 of 20 to the Huskies from 1974-93, the Ducks have won three of the last four, two of those with fourth-quarter drives. This one likely will be a passing duel between Oregon's Akili Smith and Washington's Brock Huard, the two best pro quarterback prospects in the Pac-10.

LOOKING AHEAD: Having survived a scare by Stanford, UCLA can go about clinching at least a conference title by winning at Oregon State and at Washington the next two weeks. The Bruins, of course, still have the Fiesta Bowl in mind, which will take subsequent wins over USC and Miami.... Two straight wins have Arizona State at 4-4 and talking of a bowl game, but the victories were over Stanford and Washington State, the two teams winless in league games. To be bowl-eligible, the Sun Devils probably must beat California at home, considering the Sun Devils' final games are at Oregon and Arizona.... USC, at 6-3, can become eligible for a bowl by beating Stanford. The Trojans need seven wins because of their 12-game schedule.... Too bad for Oregon State. After two straight one-point defeats, the Beavers are 4-5, meaning they must beat UCLA and Oregon to avoid a 28th straight losing season, the NCAA record. A week after a two-point conversion at the game's finish beat them at Washington, the Beavers fumbled the ball away at the Cal 12-yard line in the final minutes of a 20-19 loss.... Arizona might normally look past Washington State, but the overtime loss to the Cougars last year still irks the Wildcats, and who in the league is playing better than Arizona (8-1)? The Arizona defense is No. 1 in the Pac-10, having given up only 153 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the last three games. Arizona won those games by a combined score of 111-17.

CAMPUS STROLL: Stanford couldn't hold on to beat UCLA, but the 28-24 loss to the Brains last week ended a seven-game mn of giving up 30 or more points for the Cardinal.... Stanford is still giving up 39.2 points per game in its five Pac-10 losses, but that's not the most in the league. The defense being lit up with even greater regularity is at Washington State, where the Cougars surrendered an average of 40.8 points in their five conference losses. The two defenses meet November 14.... In the two games since Pac-10 rushing leader Reuben Droughns went out with a broken ankle, his replacements at Oregon have averaged 2.8 yards per carry. Droughns was averaging 7.4 yards per carry. In the 38-3 loss to Arizona last week, Derien Latimer had 20 carries and 47 of the Ducks' 64 total rushing yards.... The injuries to Droughns and Arizona State's J.R. Redmond have created an opening for Arizona's Trung Canidate, who last year had an injury knock him out of the race for the Pac-10 rushing title. After his 180 yards on 17 carries against Oregon, including runs of 71 and 61 yards, Canidate has 674 yards, the fourth-highest rushing total in the league.... USC sophomore CB Antuan Simmons, perceived to be the weak link in the conference's leading secondary, ran two interceptions of Brock Huard back for touchdowns, covering 29 and 90 yards, as the Trojans beat Washington 33-10. USC had interceptions on four of the Huskies' final five possessions.... Trojans QB Carson Palmer also made his first collegiate start in the game, completing 18-of-31 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown ... That UCLA eked out a win against Stanford and Oregon fell flat at Arizona may have been a matter of the Brains and Ducks running out of emotion two Saturdays after their showdown at the Rose Bowl. Since they played each other two weeks earlier in an overtime thriller, each struggled the following week before pulling out late wins, UCLA over California and Oregon over USC. Regardless, UCLA's close call against Stanford cost the Brains in the coaches and AP polls, which together make up 25 percent of the BCS formula.
