Scouts views: observations and opinions from major league scouts
Sporting News, The, May 13, 2005
Jason Kendall used to be a guy with a below-average arm who got rid of the ball quickly. Now he's got a real long throwing action. He's 2.05 to 2.1 seconds from home to second, and you can't throw guys out when you're 2-plus. He's going to be a liability with a staff that doesn't hold runners well. ... White Sox pitcher Jon Garland has an air about him. It's not only confidence. He knows now that his stuff is good enough to get guys out, and he's finally trusting it. ... The Brewers might have overvalued shortstop J.J. Hardy because his makeup is so good. His offense is a long way off. ... Shortstop Marco Scutaro plays hard for the A's. He does some crazy things sometimes, but he's a good extra player because he has enthusiasm. You know what you're going to get each day: a solid effort. ... The Angels are wishing on Paul Byrd. He has no margin for error on the mound. It's like with Baltimore's Bruce Chen. You can get by for four or five innings with those guys, but the second or third time through the order it gets tougher. They can't rely on their fastballs. They've got to have impeccable control. ... Arizona's Brandon Webb has cleaned up his delivery-he's more direct to home plate. He threw across his body last year and was real inconsistent with his location. Now he's on top of the ball, throwing downhill.
