Don't count out Bowman or his Red Wings in the West

Sporting News, The, Jan 1, 2001 by Larry Wigge

St. Louis: They think defense first as a team, but play the game at such a fast pace that it sometimes looks like they are a track team the way they move down the ice. You have to really keep your wits about you against the Blues. You have to get one man in hard against them and then block their passing lanes. But when you have defensemen as skilled as Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis, even then you don't always stop them.

San Jose: This team is for real. They play a gritty brand of defense--all hard work. Their turnaround started when Owen Nolan gained confidence that he was one of the top 10 players in the NHL. With him and Vincent Damphousse as their leaders, they have slowly added a good mix of players with draft choices like Jeff Friesen, Patrick Marleau and Marco Sturm up front and Marcus Ragnarsson and Brad Stuart on defense; And don't underestimate how good Evgeni Nabokov is. I saw him play quite a bit last season. And he was as good then as he is now.

Dallas: The Stars can't be taken lightly. They may not score a lot of goals, but they are always a threat in the playoffs because they have the ability to slow the game down and give up even fewer goals. Even with the change in rules, they seem to have been able to adjust to the way the game is played and translate that into wins."

Los Angeles: The Kings have great speed up front, and Rob Blake is having another banner season on defense. Andy Murray has this team playing very disciplined. They force you to make turnovers with their speed. The only question I see there is goaltending.

Of the other teams in the West, Bowman won't count out the Flames because of Calgary's play against Detroit this season. --L.W.

Perhaps realizing the error of their ways, the Red Wings recently called the Panthers about trying to get C Igor Larionov back. Despite Florida's struggles, Larionov says he would use his no-trade clause to veto a trade back to Detroit.... The Devils' line of C Jason Arnott, LW Patrik Elias and RW Petr Sykora underscored its status as the NHL's top line during a Stanley Cup rematch against Dallas last week. ... Before Capitals fans start raving about LW Dmitri Khristich, remember the Maple Leafs felt the same when they got Khristich from the Brains. Toronto was so happy, in fact, it !et RW Steve Sullivan go. How much would the Leafs give to do that deal over with the way Sullivan has played in Chicago? ... One rumor making the rounds before the Christmas trade embargo had the Oilers trading D Tom Poti to the Bruins for RW Sergei Samsonov. But as much as the Oilers would love to have another gifted forward, they can't afford to give up this offensively gifted defenseman.... Transition, transition, transition. It is the key to success in the NHL. Look no further than the Sharks, who are getting big contributions from D Marcus Ragnarsson, Gary Suter and Brad Stuart. In fact, San Jose's defensemen recently had a 10-game point streak.... For those who still question just how good Rangers C Mark Messier is as a leader, look no further than the turnaround performances by D Brian Leetch and RW Theo Fleury.... Message to new Canadiens G.M. Andre Savard: Big is not better when big can't play. Savard is 0-for-2 in trades for sizeable LW Gino Odjick and C Chad Kilger.... Forget the trade rumors involving D Rob Blake. The Kings have reopened negotiations with Blake and LW Luc Robitaille, both potential unrestricted free agents July 1.... Penguins RW Jaromir Jagr would rather risk another groin injury than suffer another scoring slump. To that end, Jagr removed a skate insole--which he used to prevent his groin problems--and he feels like he has regained the mobility that has helped him win the past three scoring titles.... Earlier this season Blues RW Pavol Demitra wasn't playing like the player who led his team in scoring the past two seasons. He was tentative and scared following postconcussion syndrome. But after a three-goal, two-assist performance against the Rangers, he had 14 points over five games. That's even better than the old Demitra.
