Losing Kellen Winslow (knee) erases the Browns' chances of blowing holes in the middle of defenses with a swift tight end who runs strong routes and makes spectacular plays. Winslow is expected to miss the season because of injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash. Winslow's replacement is Steve Heiden, a competent meat-and-potatoes tight end with experience and maturity but pedestrian playmaking ability.

Winslow's absence will shift attention to the running game. Instead of using the pass to set up the run, the team will have to do things the other way around. RB Reuben Droughns, who wants a new contract, might think Winslow's injury enhances his negotiating power. It doesn't. Expect versatile Lee Suggs to be the team's No. 1 back.
