Observations by pro scouts from around the NFL
Without Brad Johnson, the Bucs wouldn't have won the Super Bowl last year. They're similar to what they were before--a great defensive team that ends op getting bogged down because of offense. Johnson made that offense last season. He picked up that Jon Gruden style. What he does is make decisions, and he's very tough. He hung in the pocket behind a spotty offensive line and didn't let the pass rush bother him.... I kind of see Jerome Bettis' role diminishing a bit this year. He has been a staple in the Steelers' offense for some time, but they've evolved from a power running team to more of a wide-open, four-wide receiver, attacking offense. That really limits Jerome's role because he's not a real quick back, and he doesn't catch the ball well out of the backfield.... The 49ers' linebackers are a pretty solid bunch, and they get Jamie Winborn back. He missed most of last season with an injury that was a huge setback for him personally and for their linebackers. I like his movement and his ability to play in the passing game, and he does a nice job of anticipating in the running game. He brings a physical type of play to that linebacking crew.... There's no doubt that Washington has upgraded its talent, but there are two big questions: How long will it take for all of the new players to mesh together, and is Patrick Ramsey ready to win now or is he still a year or two away? ... Even with adding Peerless Price, I still think receiver could be Atlanta's danger zone. I know they like Brian Finneran, and right now he's their No. 2 wideout, but I've never thought of him as a No. 2. That's going to be a problem until they can address that.... Adalius Thomas, the Ravens' defensive end, is a guy you have to look at as a player on the rise. He's a real quick, athletic guy who can run. He's a very good pass rusher and does a pretty good job of playing the run at 270 pounds.
