Top 5 name players in independent leagues

Sporting News, The,  May 27, 2005  by Stan McNeal

1 Rickey Henderson, OF, San Diego Surf Dawgs (Golden Baseball League). At 46, Rickey thinks he still can play in the majors. We're not sure why. Nobody showed an interest in him when he was 45.

2 John Rocker, LHP, Long Island Ducks (Atlantic League). It doesn't look like you'll have to worry about seeing "Off His" in the majors anytime soon. He walked 12 in his first 4 1/3 innings, no small reason his ERA was 12.46.

3 Stephen Drew, SS, Camden Riversharks (Atlantic League). J.D.'s brother is just biding his time till he signs with the Diamondbacks or goes back into the draft. He has been biding it productively with a .316 average in his first nine games.

4 Pete Rose Jr., 1B, Long Island Ducks. Now 35, Junior is one of 14 ex-major leaguers on the roster of the defending league champs, if he continues hitting poorly--.180 after 14 games-there soon could be one fewer.

5 Stubby Clapp, IF, Edmonton Cracker-Cats (Northern League). OK, so this isn't exactly a name you've heard of unless you're a die-hard Cardinals fan who loves the Joe McEwing types. We're just glad someone with such a great baseball name remains in the game.
