How to … do right by Dad on Father's Day

Sporting News, The, June 9, 2003 by Mike Kilduff

You probably gave Dad plenty of paperweights and neckties over the years on Father's Day, plus more than a few ulcers. Now that you have a bank account and a better understanding of why he did all that he did--for you!--do something for him. Here's some fatherly advice:

DO

throw a ball around (Or, if you're from New York, "Have a catch").

DON'T

test out that 12-to-6 yakker, at least not without a little warning to Dad.

DO

play golf with Dad.

DON'T

be too cheap to spring for a golf cart.

DO

take Dad to a baseball game.

DON'T

worry if you can't acquire the best seats in the yard, but

DON'T

settle for standing-room tickets. And,

DON'T

get so liquored up that Dad has to drive home.

DO

let Morn know if you plan to take Dad out for a "social" and some dinner after the game or golf. Please, please

DON'T

think of Dad as your wingman.

DO

splurge for a matted, mounted and framed image of that game or that player Dad always talked about when you were a kid.

DON'T

spend a fortune on eBay to land the wad of 'bacci chewed by that player during that game Dad always talked about.
