Where art thou looking for Father's Day gifts?

Sporting News, The, June 9, 2003 by Stuart Miller

Got no time? No ideas? That's the Father's Day blues. Don't fret: All you need is Fanscape and Google.com and you can surprise Dad with a work of art featuring that one subject you bond over: sports. For less than $100 you can get a print; $100-$300 buys higher-quality reproductions, usually in limited editions. There's plenty to choose from on the Internet--action scenes, star portraits and stadium panoramas. Stick with these Fanscape favorites, and you'll be fine:

* Gloves, a bat, an old catcher's mask, programs and baseball cards scattered about a table in Michael Harrison's Baseball evoke a warm feeling of nostalgia without sinking into cloying sentimentality.

* G.T. Johnson II's best portraits are more than simple representations of a favorite athlete. Johnson captures the simple grace of athletics. His painting of a postgame, sweaty and drained Pete Maravich is a reminder of the life-affirming joy of competition.

* Searching for a favorite stadium or a classic moment, such as Willie Mays' catch in the '54 World Series? Odds are Andy Jurinko, William Feldman or Bill Purdom have committed it to paper or canvas.

* For those willing to go above $1,000, see J.A. Fernandez's Moment of Truth series--the highlights are Hands Up and View From Quarterback, in which a quarterback prepares to pass under pressure.
