Bob Hille's Starting Five

Sporting News, The, June 19, 2000 by Bob Hille

1 Steve Young. He's calling it quits, same as the rest of the 49ers did three weeks into the '99 season.

2 The T206 Honus Wagner. Starting July 5, eBay will auction off this 1909 baseball card. It'll be on the same page as the 1909 bicycle and 1909 clothespin.

3 John Rocker. He was sent to AAA to iron out his fastball and slider. The Braves, meanwhile, are working on a change-of-place.

4 The NBA Finals. Games 1 and 2 in L.A. were a win-win proposition: Shaq proved his superstar worth, and Rik Smits landed a part in Dinosaur 2.

5 SportsPlayBooks.com. The website was selling its inventory--acquired from, among others, fired coaches and former players--for $23.95 a pop, until universities complained. Forget the competitive implications, the colleges thought that was way too cheap for used books.
