Dream week: June 22-28

Sporting News, The,  June 30, 2006  by Kyle Veltrop

THURSDAY, 6/22 Blue Jays at Braves

* Roger Clemens is supposed to make his season debut against the Twins, but the better big-picture story might be A.J. Burnett's return from the D.L. If he earns his money--even if he earns half his money--Toronto could have enough pitching to complement its beer-league offense and taste champagne in the fall. The first hurdle for ex-N.L. Easter Burnett: an O-for-career mark vs. the Braves.

SUNDAY, 6/25 Cubs at Twins

* OK, so this isn't exactly a playoff preview. But this game within the game makes it compelling: rarely-gives-up-a-hit Carlos Zambrano vs. the rarely-makes-an-out Joe Mauer.

MONDAY, 6/26 Braves at Yankees

* For the better part of a decade, these were the heavy favorites to meet in the World Series. Well, write it in Sharpie: There's no way that's going to happen this year. In fact, Bobby Cox is starting to get ejected on purpose just so he doesn't have to watch his bullpen.

FRIDAY, 6/23 Astros at White Sox

* Three words that create a buzz: World Series rematch. However, if you remember the original, then this sequel might pack the wallop of Big Momma's House 2.

SATURDAY, 6/24 Reds at Indians

* These two offenses can bash with the best of them, so expect the final to resemble the score of a football game--one that doesn't involve the Browns.

TUESDAY, 6/27 A's at Padres

* Two strong pitching clubs. Two challenged offenses. One big ballpark. On paper, that adds up to a low-scoring affair. Then again, no one plays the game on paper. Well, except Billy Beane.

WEDNESDAY, 6/28 Mets at Red Sox

* Pedro pitching at Fenway used to be an event. It will be again.
