ALLAN HOUSTON, G, Knicks

Will tour this summer to recruit mentors for the National Mentoring Partnership. Funds a scholarship at Tennessee in honor of his father, his college coach. Works closely with Knicks programs Courtside Classroom and the My Teacher Is My Hero Award.

JUWAN HOWARD, F, Nuggets

Delivered more than 2,000 coats last year to the needy; his Warm Hearts Coat Drive has provided more than 33,000 coats since its start. Partners with Chicago schools in a literacy program that reaches more than 40,000 kids in 58 schools.

JASON KIDD, G, Nets

Treated 25 kids from a local Salvation Arm chapter to a holiday shopping spree at FAO Schwarz, followed by a catered breakfast. Donates to a number of charities and is heavily involved in promoting literacy among kids.

SHAWN MARION, F, Suns

Donated $1 million to charities through the Valley of the Sun United Way after signing his contract last August. The money will go to cancer victims, basketball leagues for kids and groups that aid first-time homeowners.

DONYELL MARSHALL, F, Bulls

Played in a wheelchair basketball game with patients from Shriners Hospital. Twice treated kids from Reading, Pa., Boys & Girls Club to seats at a 76ers game. Took 30 kid from a local Boys & Girls Club on a private holiday shopping spree.

WALTER McCARTY, F, Celtics

Uses his I Love Music Foundation to raise money for groups supporting the development kid musicians, including camps and schools. Has helped support voice students from Berklee College of Music.

TRACY McGRADY, G, Magic

Host for Washington, D.C., sniper victim Iran Brown and Brown's family for a game and a vacation in Orlando after sending gifts and a message to Brown in the hospital. Host at the NBA All-Star Game for a family whose father was overseas in the military.

RON MERCER, G, Pacers

Gave basketball equipment to a Nashville high school team and brought its players to a Pacers game. Donated $5,000 to buy clothing and blankets for 500 needy persons at a Thanksgiving dinner. Presented 300 backpacks, filled with supplies, to a local school.

JERMAINE O'NEAL, F, Pacers

Bought $10,000 worth of clothing, toys, small electronics and books for more than 400 kids from a local housing project. Sponsors a city/county basketball tournament and awards kids scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.

GARY PAYTON, G, Bucks

The family of a young cancer victim credits a child's contact with Payton for the fact the cancer now is in remission. In December, while in Seattle, bused 50 kids from a Ronald McDonald House to FAO Schwarz for a holiday shopping spree.

JALEN ROSE, G, Bulls

Started Giving Back Fund to help raise money for children who have lost parents; was inspired by a Chicago night-club fire in February. Has funded and distributed athletic wear, toys and gift certificates to 100 abused and neglected kids.

ERIC SNOW, G, 76ers

His remarkable program focuses on the role of fathers in kids' lives. Invites one local father and son to every home game and takes trips with fathers and sons to local attractions. In November, he was the host for a clinic for 50 fathers and their sons.
