Why would the Sonics take Vladimir Radmanovic with their first pick when they have Rashard Lewis? Going by what I have heard of Radmanovic, they seem to be very similar.
Steve Nichol, Las Vegas
Steve: Well, you're right, Lewis and Radmanovic are similar. The pick was a little puzzling, especially considering Jimi Hendrix has a better chance of returning to Seattle than Patrick Ewing, and the team either will trade Vin Baker or be stuck with him at power forward. The Sonics really could have used help at center and power forward.

There were a couple of things at work: Radmanovic was the best player available, and Troy Murphy was the only other player the team could have taken at No. 12, but the Sonics were blown away by Radmanovic's potential.
Another thing to remember is Lewis' contract is up next year, and he is a good bet to get the maximum salary, which the Sonics might be unwilling to pay. Even if Lewis stays in Seattle, the Sonics say they'll find ways to have both on the floor simultaneously.

It sure didn't take new Portland coach Mo Cheeks long to pick up the company line on resident cuckoo PF Rasheed Wallace. "I don't intend to harness Rasheed," Cheeks says. "I think his emotions are some of the things you have to like about him on the court." Sounds a lot like what Mike Dunleavy used to say, at least until it became clear that the end was nigh.... It's sheer coincidence, but it's probably one that should have been creepy enough to scare the Cavaliers away from first-round draft pick C DeSagana Diop: Back in February, when Diop still was a high school senior, he had a screw put into his foot by Dr. Mark Myerson of Baltimore. A few weeks earlier, Myerson inserted a screw into the foot of Cavs C Zydraunus Ilgauskas, the player Diop eventually should replace. Ilgauskas' foot is so bad he might not play again. The Cavaliers hope to have better luck with their latest Myerson patient.... Boston icon Red Auerbach usually does not get heavily involved in the Celtics' draft matters--his heart was broken when Len Bias died in 1986, and he has been loathe to participate since. But Auerbach knows SG Joseph Forte very well, and with Forte still available when the Celtics drafted at No. 21, Auerbach "suggested" the Celtics choose him.... Already looking for the next draft's Kwame Brown? Try Lenny Cooke of North Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan, N.J. Here's the rub: All of the high school lottery picks in this year's draft were big men, but Cooke is a 6-6 small forward. He has athleticism and ballhandling skills but needs a jump shot.... The Hawks improved drastically on draft day but still need a point guard. They'll try to fill the spot with a free agent, but their choices are limited. They would prefer someone like the Raptors' Alvin Williams or the Heat's Anthony Carter, but Williams probably will remain with Toronto, and Carter is a sure bet to re-sign with the Heat. Miami will give Carter starter's money--$5 million per season--which likely means PG Tim Hardaway will leave. That's a name for Atlanta to consider.... No Clipper is more thrilled with the acquisition of PF Elton Brand than C Michael Olowokandi. Sure, Olowokandi took a step backward last season, but he did not have much help in the team's frontcourt. He lined up next to the likes of Cherokee Parks, Brian Skinner, Sean Rooks and out-of-position Darius Miles at power forward.
