"Jack is one of the greatest champions we've had in our lifetime," says Sanders, who missed a 3-foot putt that would have given him the 1970 Open in regulation play. "Jack can walk away a winner and celebrate."

Nicklaus reserves the right to play in the Memorial, but he is emphatic about his departure from competitive golf.

"Outside of (the Memorial), I have no intention of playing any more tournament golf; Nicklaus says. "I like playing anywhere, if I can play well. But I just don't play well enough anymore."

The return to St. Andrews will revive memories of the days when he played superbly.--R.S.
