Outside the box > the Bartman game

Sporting News, The,  July 15, 2005  by Conor Nicholl

The last time the Marlins and Cubs played in a big series, some folks in Chicago decided to blow up a baseball and serve it with pasta.

That culinary feat occurred in the aftermath of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS. The game, of course, still is fresh in Cubs fans' minds: The Marlins rallied for eight runs in the eighth inning after Cubs fan Steve Bartman took a potential putout away from Moises Alou. Florida won Game 7 the next night, then beat the Yankees in the World Series. Bartman became part of Windy City baseball lore-and the ball became part of a restaurant's house sauce.

It's unlikely that something similar will happen this weekend when the teams meet in South Florida, but the series still has importance: The Cubs and Marlins began the week battling the Braves--and each other--for the N.L. wild card.

(a) Castillo lofted the
foul fly that became the
Bartman Ball. Since
that turn of events,
Castillo has won a
World Series ring (his
second), signed a
$16 million contract,
won a second Gold
Glove and batted .304.

(b) D-Lee was traded to the
Cubs for Hee Seop Choi and
a minor league pitcher about
five weeks after this game.
Lee batted .188 in the LCS
but had 31 homers and 92
RBIs in the regular season.
Those numbers still are his
career highs, but he should
obliterate them this season.

(c) Other than a story
about urinating on his
hands, Alou hasn't
had any major
controversies since
Bartman. Now playing
for his father, Felipe,
in San Francisco, Alou
is batting .325 with
12 homers.

(d) Ramirez is the only Cubs position
player who started this game and still is
with the team. By contrast, six of the
Marlins' eight starters are still with Florida.

(e) This was one of seven relief appearances
that Willis, then a rookie sensation, made in
the '03 playoffs after being a starter during
the regular season. He went on to throw 32/3
shutout innings in the World Series.

(f) Fox hasn't had a
victory since Game
6. He pitched in 12
games for Florida in
2004, signed with
the Cubs for '05,
then went on the
D.L. with an elbow
injury after becoming
their closer.
