Q&A Kenny Wallace

Sporting News, The,  July 22, 2005  by Lee Spencer

Kenny Wallace is having his best Busch season since 1994, when he finished fourth. At fifth in the standings, Wallace has been strong all season, with nine top los and just one DNF.

TSN: This is the strongest competitively that the NASCAR Busch Series has been in a long, long time. How does it feel to be in the thick of things?

WALLACE: I'm the happiest I've ever been in my career. I'm running real competitive. I've got a good race team. I'm running a handful of Cup races. I'm doing my dirt car. I'm doing TV. Life is good.

TSN: Both of your brothers are racing in Cup full time. Is that something you want to do in the future?

WALLACE: I have a three-year deal with ppc Racing, so I couldn't go Cup racing if I tried. I'm just having a real good time here.

TSN: Is the equipment where you want it to be?

WALLACE: It's really, really close. Wes Ward is my crew chief. We've got second three times. We're just getting beat by some trick stuff right now. We got beat twice at Nashville and once at Darlington. (Darlington) was a damn good race. Me and Matt Kenseth went at it pretty good. We're having fun because we've got a top 10 team no matter what.--L.S.

TRUCKS DISH

Todd Bodine "ain't wastin' time no more."' Behind the wheel of the No. 30 Allman Brothers Toyota Tundra, Bodine took the checkered flag at Kansas in just his second start after reuniting with Germain/Arnold Racing. Not only was it Bodine's first win of the season, but it was the first win for Toyota this year and fifth since Toyota entered NASCAR in 2004. Bodine, who replaced Chad Chaffin as the driver, has rejoined his former crew chief, Mike Hillman Jr. In 11 truck starts driving the No. 30 with Hillman--eight races in 2004 and three in 2005--Bodine has three wins and seven top 10s, including six top fives. Overall, Bodine has five DNFs in 13 starts in 2005. * Bill Lester broke the track qualifying record at Kansas with a lap of 173,633 mph in the No. 22 Toyota. He shared the front row with teammate Mike Skinner, and Toyotas held down three of the top five starting positions. Winning his second career pole led to a career-best top five finish for Lester. * The crew chief swap of Mike Beam and John Monsam at Roush Racing last month paid off with a career-best qualifying run and race finish for rookie Todd Kluever at Kansas. The Beam-led No. 50 Ford started third and finished second and is 16th in points. Monsam is overseeing Ricky Craven's No. 99 Ford. The team is fifth in the standings but has yet to win this season. * Kelly Sutton set a record for most starts (33) by a woman in the Craftsman Truck Series at Kansas on July 2. Sutton drives the No. 02 Chevrolet. * John Andretti finished ninth in his truck debut for Billy Ballew in the No. 15 Chevy at Kansas.--L.S.
