Two drivers seek comfy surroundings

Sporting News, The,  July 21, 2006  by Matt Crossman

When Greg Biffle learned he would be driving his favorite car at Chicagoland, he offered a challenge to crew chief Doug Richert: "You get it to be like it was, and I guarantee you a win." Biffle has six wins in the car, but it hasn't been the same since he all but destroyed it last fall in a crash during practice at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

He wasn't the only one driving a favorite car at Chicagoland last Sunday. Kasey Kahne drove the car with which he won four of the first 15 races this season. He crashed it in practice at Michigan this year, but his crew put it back together and he won the race two days later.

Biffle couldn't make good on his guarantee; he finished 11th, and Kahne remains at four wins after finishing 23rd.

With Biffle fighting to squeeze into the Chase after a run of hard luck early in the season and with Kahne looking to improve his position in the top 10, returning those cars to their dominant pasts will be critical to each drivers title hopes. The cars won't be used this weekend at New Hampshire, but they likely will be on the track at least twice before the Chase--at 2-milers Michigan and California--and five times during it.

So, what makes a good car really good? Both drivers say the feel in the cockpit is the most important thing. "The main thing is you like the way you sit in the car," Kahne says. "You like the way the seats feel, your inserts and things like that."
