David Brandt, crafty veteran

Sporting News, The, Jan 14, 2005 by Bryan Ethier

Spelling--for Chargers center/guard David Brandt, it's as simple as I before E, except after C" yet as complex as a playbook.

"I was diagnosed with a learning disability in first grade and have had it ever since," says Brandt, in his second season in San Diego after beginning his career in 2001 with the Redskins.

Brandt's reading and spelling difficulties have not derailed him on or off the field. He has a degree in elementary education from Michigan and is an experienced substitute teacher. He took a hiatus from football in 2002 to teach in his hometown of Jenison, Mich.

"I enjoy working with kids, helping them along," says the 6-4, 311-pounder. "I'll enjoy going back into teaching someday. I'll definitely work with kids."

Brandt also enjoys working with his hands and tools. He's a master craftsman who specializes in outdoor furniture, made from pine, oak or maple.

"I make quality things the same way I take pride in football," he says. "It takes a lot of trying, but after you get it the first time, it's easy."

As easy as A-B-C.
