Sporting News, The, Jan 14, 2005
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-4/310
STRENGTHS: Is a tough, durable, fierce competitor with an extremely powerful punch that can knock back a defender. Has good size and a strong upper body, Has great lower-body strength and can be effective at moving the pile. Plays with an aggressive attitude at the point of attack. Gets good hand placement and wins most battles when he's locked on. Is relentless in the running game and finishes his blocks with tenacity and a mean streak. Sets quickly in pass protection and is excellent at maintaining separation from the defender. Has the bulk to anchor against bull rushers and rarely gives up ground.
WEAKNESSES: Is not an exceptional athlete and has limited quickness and agility. Can be a liability in space; struggles when pulling or trap-blocking and doesn't have great mobility. Does not change direction well and will miss blocks against moving targets.
BOTTOM LINE: A sixth-round draft pick in 1996, Rivera has been a starter since 1998. At 32, he is approaching the downside of his career, but Rivera remains one of the smartest, most durable and effective linemen in the league. He works extremely hard, and it has paid off with three straight Pro Bowl selections.--War Room scouts
