Mike DeCourcy's 3 questions

1 When will Pittsburgh get really serious? Playing most of their nonleague schedule at home appears to have bored the Panthers. They lacked intensity and precision in two recent challenges, against Richmond and South Carolina. Star players Carl Krauser and Chevon Troutman carried their teammates in those games, but the other players can't keep letting themselves be carried and expect a third straight Big East title.
2 Has St. John's become a Big East trap? Not even devoted Johnnies fans expect their team's N.C. State victory and Holiday Festival championship will lead to immediate excellence. But coach Norm Roberts sees his best players, Daryll Hill and Lamont Hamilton, starting to understand their responsibilities. "We have played hard and unselfishly;' Roberts says. "If we play like that, we'll have a chance to win some games."

3 Has anyone noticed Connecticut's Josh Boone? Not everyone can step up from productive supporting player to star. A powerful 6-10 center, Boone has flourished. He has scored in double figures in every game and hasn't had fewer than eight rebounds. He has yet to miss more than half his shots in a game. The competition has not been extraordinary, and UConn still has issues. But Boone isn't one of them.
