Wilbur Wood started and lost both games of a doubleheader. The White Sox knuckleballer got only one Yankee out in the first game and was knocked out in the fifth in the second. Still, for the second straight year he led the league in wins (24)--an achievement more impressive considering the White Sox finished in fifth.

The lefthander won 20 games for four straight years, 1971-74. In his 17-year career, Wood was 164-156 with a 3.24 ERA. It's doubtful Wood's dubious feat will be repeated. Doubleheaders are rarely played, except for rain makeups. And few, if any, managers would start the same pitcher twice on the same day.
