Bob Hille's starting 5

Sporting News, The, July 29, 2002

(1) The trade deadline. The Yankees' singular wherewithal to add payroll has been overblown. In fact, they have only $1.7 million to spend on a backup visitors' batboy.

(2) The NBA salary cap. It fell for the first time since its inception for the 1984-85 season, and it couldn't have come at a worse time because, you know, good criminal defense attorneys are expensive.

(3) Ell Manning. His old man put the kibosh on Ole Miss' Heisman campaign. For some reason, Archie didn't like the slogan: "Hey, don't you know who my dad is?"

(4) The Japan Bowl. For the econ-challenged tuning in to the 49ers-Skins game, this qualifies as a trade deficit: We get Ichiro, they get Steve Spurrier.

(5) The USOC presidency. There are three candidates, and all I want to know is this: Is the winner's hiring contingent upon passing a drug test?
