A New Beat!

Sporting News, The, August 2, 1999 by Chris Jenkins

In 32 years, the New Orleans Saints have yet to win a playoff game. Or course, they've had only four chances. What have they been missing all this time? (Besides, uh, good players and coaches who don't use the phrase "diddly-poo" in their postgame tirades, that is.) That's right: A fight song.

In Chicago, Mike Ditka had "Bear down, Chicago Bears." In Washington, they have "Hail to the Redskins." So, with sincere apologies to Ricky Martin, we present our nomination for the Saints' new fight song:

DA VIDA DITKA

   He's got a heart condition
trick hip and a big cigar
Right now, he's on a mission:
Make his Saints into playoff stars

   (guitar solo)

   He's got a disposition
   Threw his gum at Candlestick
   He's got a golf addiction
and his hair is always slick

He'll make you put your pads on
and go practice in the rain
   Quarterbacks won't lead an easy
   life
no matter how hard they train
   He'll make them go insane/
   C'mon!

   Onside, offside, out
   Livin' Da Vida Ditka
   N'awlins is his stomping ground
   Livin' Da Vida Ditka
His wig is full of dreads
   His cigar is always lit-ka
   He's loved back in Chi-town
   Livin' Da Vida Ditka

   Draft day
   in New York City
So he said, "Aw, what the hell.
I'll trade my draft for a kid
   named Ricky
and I'll get on the links by
   twelve."

   He hangs in the French
   Quarter
   Bet he sips on Hurricanes
Yells at guys named Billy Joe
   'cuz interceptions boil his
   veins
And he's in the Hall of
   Fame/C'mon/

   Onside, offside, out
   Livin' Da Vida Ditka
   N'awlins is his stomping
   ground

His wig is full of dreads
   His cigar is always lit-ka
   He's loved back in
   Chi-town
