Steve Garvey's consecutive games streak came to an end. The Padres first baseman, who played in a National League-record 1,207 straight games, dislocated his left thumb in a collision at home with Atlanta pitcher Pascual Perez in the opener of a doubleheader. Garvey was trying to score on a wild pitch. The streak, which began September 3, 1975, is the fourth longest in history, behind streaks by Cal Ripken, Lou Gehrig and Everett Scott. In his 19-year career with the Dodgers and Padres, Garvey hit .294, with 272 home runs and 1,308 RBIs. He led the league in hits twice, was named MVP in 1974 and won four Gold Gloves.
