Sporting News, The,  August 5, 2005  by Jacob Bennett,  Vele Jankovic,  Ann Scrimenti,  Taylor W. Smith,  Brian Kinel

'Every pitcher who deliberately throws at a batter and every player who slides into second base with intent to clobber an infielder is guilty of a far greater crime than Kenny Rogers.'--Jacob Bennett, Coming N.Y.

* Why would the Bucks give Michael Redd the maximum? Like many other maximum-dollar players in the NBA, Redd doesn't deserve it. He doesn't have the clutch shooting, and he can't take over games. Plus, the Bucks have Desmond Mason.

--Vele Jankovic, Kenosha, Wis.

* As a 17-year-old female who longs to be a sportswriter, Dave Kindred's article about Mary Garber (TSN, July 8) was very touching and inspirational. I applaud all women sports journalists who work "in a man's world." Thanks to Mary Garber and the SPORTING NEWS' Kara Yorio and Tricia Garner, who have paved the way for future women sportswriters (and, hopefully, AFC scouts) such as me.

--Ann Scrimenti, Erie, Pa.

* I've read accusations of steroid use many times in your publication, but I'm surprised Derrek Lee hasn't been bombarded with his own set of accusations--yet. Is there really any other way to explain his rise from utility player to Triple Crown candidate? If you're going to bash, then bash equally.

--Taylor W. Smith, Eagle Grove, Iowa

* After reading comments in Tricia Garners column by lunatic cheerleading room Sharon (TSN, July 8), I am more concerned about kids in sports than ever before. Please remember that the overwhelming majority of kids playing sports will never advance beyond the high school level. To push these kids with goals of professional contracts or even scholarships is crazy.--Brian Kinel, Syracuse, N.Y.
