Dream week: July 28-August 3

Sporting News, The,  August 5, 2005  by Chris Bahr

THURSDAY, JULY 28

Mets at Astros

* Carlos Beltran returns to the scene of the crime--he stole 28 bases without getting caught for Houston last season. His second half surge launched the Astros to the NLCS and earned Beltran a train robberylike $119 million contract from the Mets in the offseason. Plan ahead for the weather because the roof at Minute Maid will be open all series in order to fit Rogers Clemens' and Pedro Martinez's egos in the park.

FRIDAY, JULY 29

Indians at Mariners

* A year later, Adrian Beltre's and Victor Martinez's breakout seasons look about as legitimate as their teams' hopes for a division title.

SATURDAY, JULY 30

Tigers at A's

* Look for A's G.M. Billy Beane at the park. He'll be the one wearing the "I Still Don't Want Jeremy Bonderman" T-shirt.

SUNDAY, JULY 31

Dodgers at Cardinals

* It has been all downhill for L.A. since these teams met in last season's NLDS. Of the Dodgers' starting nine from that series-ending Game 4, five players are gone and the other four have spent time on the D.L. in '05.

MONDAY, AUGUST 1

White Sox at Orioles

* Note to the Orioles: Keep Scott Podsednik off base. In three games against Baltimore in May, Podsednik was 6-for-12 with two walks and five steals.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 2

Royals at Red Sox

* In a conversation at base, Mike Sweeney mentions the Royals would have been contenders if they had been able to retain Johnny Damon, Beltran and others. Damon's response, "It has been so long, dude, it seems like that was Cro-Magnon times."

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3

Cubs at Phillies

* After losing the first two games of three-game series against the lilies in May, Cubs manager Dusty Baker shaved his mustache to shake things up-and it worked. Quick, someone get Corey Patterson A pack of razors.
