Carpenter improved his candidacy for the N.L. Cy Young Award by going 1-0 with a 0.50 ERA in 18 innings against two elite starters last week. On July 17, he threw a complete-game shutout against the Astros' Roger Clemens. Last Friday, he matched the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano for nine innings, allowing just one run.
