Mr. Jockularity

Sporting News, The,  August 12, 2005

I used to be able to really fling a football, but in the 10 or so years since I stopped playing with my buddies in the park, I seem to have lost the ability to throw a tight spiral. What am I doing wrong?--All wussed out in St. Louis

Mr. Jockularity has some firsthand experience with this. It's not about the position of your fingers or the motion of your arm, which I'm guessing were your first two points of emphasis. It's about the strength of your grip. What you've got, sad to say, is a cruel (but not unusual) case of yuppie hands. Ask your doctor, a physical therapist or your toughest friend about hand-strengthening exercises--or carry around one of those squeeze balls like Rocky Balboa did when he worked for Gazzo the loan shark. The point is, it's fixable! You'll be back to your old wannabe-Montana self in no time--just don't break any windows in the office parking lot.
