Coming attractions

Sporting News, The, August 30, 2004 by Chris Bahr

Upcoming key series: Angels at Red Sex (August 31-September 2).

The Angels still have hopes of winning the American League West; the Red Sox are using the wild card-or-bust approach. Anaheim leads the season series, 4-2, thanks in large part to Vladimir Guerrero's heroics (three homers, 13 RBIs, nine of them in one game). Among Boston's projected starters, Curt Schilling beat the Angels in his only start against them this season, but Bronson Arroyo and Derek Lowe are a combined 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA against Anaheim.

Padres at Cardinals (August 31-September 2).

The Padres are chasing the N.L. wild card, so this could be a Division Series preview. The teams are meeting for the first time this year, and they'll go at it again next week at Petco Park. Both have unheralded pitching staffs that rank among the top five in the N.L. in ERA, but few clubs can match St. Louis' potent lineup.
