Knotty problem

Sporting News, The,  August 30, 2004  by William Drennan

The situation: Runner on third base, two strikes on the batter. The batter swings and misses but is hit by the pitch, and the ball goes to the backstop. The batter beats the catcher's throw to first, and the runner on third crosses the plate without being tagged out. Is the batter entitled to first base? Does the run count?

The call: The batter is out, and the runner must return to third base. Rule 6.05(f) says, "A batter is out if he attempts to hit a third strike and the ball touches him." Under Rule 5.09(a), the ball becomes dead once it hits a batter, so in this instance the runner cannot advance.
