Lance Armstrong

Sporting News, The,  Sept 2, 2005

What is Lance Armstrong's legacy? Is it his previously unimaginable seven consecutive victories in the Tour de France? Or the at once defiant and easy manner with which he transformed a quaint European sport into an intercontinental event marked by intense rivalries, a good measure of controversy and major star appeal? Or is it the grace he showed in beating cancer and the work he has done to respire millions to join the_race to cure all forms of the disease?

Of course, it's all of those things. Armstrong announced his retirement after win No. 7. shouting, "Vive le Tour forever!"

He has done his part to make it so.
