Brotherly bond

Sporting News, The, Sept 3, 2001 by S. W.

Last season, Jason Giambi put the A's on his back and carried them to the postseason. This season, Giambi is getting more help with the offensive load, particularly from his younger brother Jeremy, the team's second-leading hitter.

The Brothers Giambi are in position to become only the second set of brothers to finish 1-2 on the same team in batting average in a single season. The Hall of Fame Waners, Paul and Lloyd, accomplished the feat four times with the Pirates of the 1920s and '30s. It was Paul first, Lloyd second each time.

In 1927, the first year they did it, Paul Warier led the National League with a .380 average, and Lloyd finished third with a .355 mark. Paul Waner won the N.L. MVP award that season.

Lloyd finished a season with a better average than Paul only twice in the 16 seasons they played together.
