A stick-and-ball fan's guide to NASCAR

Sporting News, The, Sept 8, 2003 by Matt Crossman

What does a driver do if he has to make a pit stop, if you know what I mean, in the middle of a race?

If this isn't the most frequently asked question, it's the most frequently pondered. If you want to have a chance encounter with a NASCAR driver, hang out at the men's room closest to pit road right before the race starts. Even with that last minute trip to the loo, most drivers still start each race as bloated as George Steinbrenner's ego because they drink gallons of water leading up to the race. Drivers usually are dehydrated by the end of the ran because they sweat like a prom date once they get in the car. If they overdo it on the hydration and underdo it on the perspiration, and nature calls, they take a piece of advice from The Gambler: Know when to hold it. If they can't, the fire suit becomes a wet suit.
