A cure for midweek withdrawal

Sporting News, The,  Sept 6, 2004  by Dan Graf

Madden 2005 PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, GameBoy Advance, PlayStation, PC

If you drop $50 on a Madden video game every year, you probably are so used to perfection that you don't appreciate it. You rip open the package, lead your favorite team into the regular season and flip the game off late in a bitter loss to preserve your Super Bowl dreams. But that's Madden for Dummies.

To let Madden truly wash over you--call this approach Madden as Art--you'll need to look a little closer. When you play the Colts, notice that Peyton Manning audibles more than any other quarterback--just as in real life. When you pull in Packers holdout Mike McKenzie for a morale check, try not to sneer when he says he's "a little down." That's strange, Mike, because some guy behind the front railing at virtual Lambeau is trying to boost spirits, sporting a helmet with antlers growing out the sides and doing the Tomahawk Chop with a cheese wedge stuck to a stick.

OK, Madden isn't quite perfect--it offers expanded controls for 2005 that will make your defense better but hasn't noticeably improved the computer's D, meaning more blowouts in your favor if you are an experienced man-against-the-machiner. Still, all that means is you already have a reason to look forward to Madden 2006.
