Trojans coach calls NCAA 'insensitive'
Sporting News, The, Sept 6, 2004
After months of speculation about the playing future of Southern California's Mike Williams, the NCAA last week ruled against reinstating the 20-year-old wide receiver, who was shut out of the NFL draft by an appeals court in May Williams caught a school-record 16 touchdown passes as a sophomore last season, helping the Trojans to a share of the national title. USC coach Pete Carroll discussed the effects of the NCAA's decision with host Petros Papadakis on Sporting News Radio station 1540 The Ticket, the home of the Trojans.
Carroll on his reaction to the ruling: "I'm really frustrated for Mike. This has been an unbelievably long process. His family, Mike, our people at the university--we've all been jumping through hoops for months."

On waiting three months for the ruling: "It's not like the big Wizard of Oz sitting there. It was people that were making the decision about a young man's future, and it seems very insensitive at this time the way they handled it. For an organization that's supposed to be student athlete-friendly, this is any thing but that."
On how this will hurt the Trojans this season: "We've prepared throughout spring football and fall camp without (Williams). You might want to see this as a distraction for us. It isn't."
