The U.S. Olympic basketball team's 62-game winning streak that stretched back to 1936 ended in a controversial goldmedal game against the Soviet Union in Munich. With three seconds remaining, Doug Collins hit two free throws that put the Americans ahead, 50-49. Time then expired, but international officials put three seconds back on the clock when the Soviet coach insisted he had called for a timeout earlier. After catching a long inbounds pass, Alexander Belov scored on a layup, giving the Soviet team a 51-50 victory. The U.S. team protested unsuccessfully and later refused to accept the silver medal.
