September's dangerous games

Sporting News, The,  Sept 13, 2004

Georgia Tech at North Carolina, September 18. Beware the sandwich game. The Yellow Jackets will be coming off a showdown at Clemson and will be looking ahead to Miami when they travel to North Carolina for the Heels' ACC home opener.

West Virginia at Central Florida, September 11. The Mountaineers have been waiting a year for another shot at their nemesis: Maryland. Coach Rich Rodriguez must get his team to focus on a road trip to face coach George O'Leary's UCF club the week before.

Texas Tech at New Mexico, September 11. How do you slow down Texas Tech's high-powered offense? Keep it off the field with a great running game, which is what DonTrell Moore and New Mexico might be able to do when the Raiders come to town

Louisville at Tulane, September 18. The Cardinals appear to be a Conference USA superpower this year, but a three-game road trip will be a big test. In the second of the three games, the Cards face Tulane in the Green Wave's conference opener.

Toledo at Eastern Michigan, September 18. Toledo is a great team, but it starts the season at Minnesota and at Kansas before facing Eastern Michigan. The Eagles have a new coach, a physical attitude and enough returning starters to make it interesting.

Georgia at South Carolina, September 11. Does Lou Holtz have any magic left? South Carolina is one of the SEC's sleeper teams. The Gamecocks' running game is good enough to control the tempo against the Odell Thurman-less Dawgs.

North Texas vs. Florida Atlantic, September 11. North Texas might be the Sun Belt's big boy, but, after a season-opening game at Texas, there might be a letdown. Florida Atlantic's veteran offense and strong passing game could shake the Mean Green.

Boise State at UTEP, September 18. Coach Mike Price will get the WAC's attention if UTEP beats Boise State. The Broncos will be coming off an Oregon State game and could be too high after a huge win or too low after losing to yet another BCS team.
