Top 5: injuries that make you go … d'oh!

Sporting News, The,  Sept 16, 2005  by Shawn Reid

1 Bambi's revenge. Clint Barmes was the clear choice for 2005 National League Rookie of the Year--until Rockies teammate Todd Helton introduced him to venison. While carrying a package of the deer meat up some stairs, Barmes slipped and fell, breaking his collarbone. The injury cost him 78 games. Somewhere, Thumper is laughing.

2 Forget pitch counts--how about word counts? When Carlos Zambrano's right elbow started bothering him, Cubs manager Dusty Baker was accused of overusing his fiery ace. But Dusty was found innocent of pitcher abuse when team doctors determined Zambrano's e-mail habits--he was spending hours each day corresponding with his family in Venezuela--were the real culprit. Zambrano cut back on his correspondence and has had no further problems.

3 Well, at least he's civic-minded. Padres ace Jake Peavy had to go to the emergency room for a tetanus shot after cutting his left (nonthrowing) hand while taking out the trash. The nurse insisted that he take the shot in his right arm, but Peavy was able to convince her he needed it for other duties--namely, his start the next night.

4 He let the bed bugs bite. White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye missed four games when he was bitten by spiders in his Cleveland hotel room and the bites became infected.

5 I'm so rested, I can't see straight. How can too much sleep harm your eyesight? Ask Richie Sexson. The Mariners' big first baseman missed a game after suffering a distorted cornea--the result of sleeping too long in an unusual position.
