Minor league update

Sporting News, The,  Sept 16, 2005  by Kevin Wheeler

Expect these prospects to play a lot in September as they help their teams down the stretch and audition for 2006 jobs.

Jeremy Hermida, OF, Marlins. The Marlins recalled Hermida before September 1, so he is eligible to be on the club's playoff roster. Hermida made a great big-league debut by hitting a pinch grand slam in his first at-bat. He earned the promotion by hitting .293 with 18 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 111 walks at Class AA Carolina.

Justin Huber, 1B, Royals. Given his minor league numbers this season (.326, 23 home runs, 97 RBIs at Class AA and AAA), why did Huber sit in the minors while guys such as Matt Stairs and Joe McEwing manned first base in Kansas City? Huber should play every day the rest of this season, and he likely will be a starter in '06.

Ben Johnson, OF, Padres. Johnson, another pre-September 1 call-up, hit .312 with 25 homers and 83 RBIs at Class AAA Portland. He also homered in his first two games after being promoted. Padres right fielder Brian Giles can become a free agent after this season; Johnson might get an opportunity to take over.

Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Nationals. There is no reason for Washington to keep playing Vinny Castiila when Zimmerman is available. Zimmerman, the club's first-round pick last June, hit .326 with nine home runs in less than half a season at Class AA.
