INSIDE THE TOP 25

Wisconsin

The Badgers aren't fancy, but they're effective. It begins on offense with a ground game that annually ranks among the nation's best. Tailback Ron Dayne, who runs behind a veteran line, needs 1,424 yards (158 per game) to become the Division I-A all-time leader. But the Badgers aren't equipped to pass often, so overcoming a deficit may be a problem. Like the offense, the defense is experienced. Cornerback Jamar Fletcher and linebacker John Favret are the headliners. The Rose Bowl champs also have a favorable schedule, as Penn State isn't on the slate.

   Team (last week) Comment

 1. Penn State (1) Need more proof that Arrington is a
                         monster?
 2. Florida State (2) Yellow Jackets showed you can pass
                         against this team.
 3. Tennessee (3) Remember, Vols probably should have
                         lost to Gators in '98.
 4. Florida (4) All right, Steve, this time you're on the
                         spot.
 5. Nebraska (5) Crouch making a pretty solid case for
                         himself.
 6. Michigan (6) Orangemen are down, but visiting the
                         Carrier Dome is never fun.
 7. Texas A&M (7) Ridiculously easy non-conference slate
                         marches on.
 8. Wisconsin (8) Dayne just keeps on truckin'.
 9. Arizona (9) Beat TSN's No. 114 team by only 15.
                         This was a title contender?
10. Miami (Fla.) (11) Think Miami faithful might be a little
                         pumped this week?
11. Ohio State (12) Miami game lingers, but Buckeyes are
                         back on right track.
12. Georgia Tech (13) Came up short at FSU, but Hamilton and Co.
                         have admirers.
13. Georgia (14) Jasper Sanks may have silly name, but he
                         sure looks solid.
14. UCLA (10) Pick a quarterback, any quarterback. Does
                         it really matter?
15. Alabama (15) Busting out for 37 points? Zow!
18. Arizona State (16) Redmond looks to rack up the yards
                         against Aggies.
17. USC (17) A 4-0 start still looks pretty likely.
18. Purdue (18) Is Brees a competitor or what?
19. BYU (20) Nice break late vs. Washington, but
                         pumped-up Rams await.
20. Kansas State (21) Another ripping of a patsy. Yawn.
21. Arkansas (22) Little appetizer before big showdown
                         in Tuscaloosa.
22. Marshall (23) With stumble by Miami (Ohio), Herd may
                         be able to run table.
23. Virginia Tech (24) Tech fans sending QB Michael Vick lots of
                         get-well cards.
24. Texas (25) Still hasn't quite adjusted to post-Ricky
                         life.
25. NC State (--) Appearance in top 25 may be short-lived
                         with Seminoles on tap.
