Todd Bodine knows a thing or two about team heartbreak

Sporting News, The,  Sept 23, 2005  by Brandon W. Mudd

More than most, Todd Bodine understands how money drives stock car racing. Since 2001, he has driven in each of the three top levels of NASCAR, but his teams have folded because of a lack of funds--including a well-financed Winston Cup team owned by Travis Carter that shut its doors because a sponsor declared bankruptcy. Bodine also saw a legitimate chance at a Busch Series title disappear in 2003 when his team, Herzog-Jackson Motorsports, cut short its season because it lacked sponsorship.

This season, however, after his Toyota Craftsman Truck Series team declared bankruptcy, Bodine landed on his feet. In his second race with Germain Racing--a team he won races with last season--he won at Kansas. (three truck wins in the past year. 15 Busch wins before that) Bodine says the lows can be very low. "It's disheartening," says Bodine, 41. 'I understand this business; it's all I've ever done. I've been fortunate that every time I get knocked down something comes along that's very good."

Fellow truck driver Terry Cook says Bodine is a role model, on and off the track.

"We were leading a race in Kentucky, and we cut a tire and obviously didn't win," Cook says. "Todd came by and shook everyone's hand and said, 'Your day's coming; you'll get yourself a win.' That's the class act that Todd really is."

Bodine, who has signed with Germain through 2006, still has Nextel Cup aspirations. "I want to get back there and prove that I can be competitive," he says.
