Scout views: observations and opinions from two NFL pro scouts, one from each conference
Sporting News, The, Sept 23, 2005
Corey Simon gives the Colts a big-time run stopper, and they haven't had that. They've used Larry Tripplett, Josh Williams, Montae Reagor. Those are normal humans, really. The only guy you had to deal with was Dwight Freeney, who gives them speed on the edge. Now they've got someone in the middle who can be disruptive and help them with the run.

... If there's a defensive rookie who has a chance to make an immediate impact, it's Demarcus Ware. I think he's going to be flying around and will help that Dallas defense tremendously. He's a threat to rush the passer, drop in coverage and run down the ballcarrier. ... Chad Johnson is an elite receiver, hut he runs his mouth too much to make me happy. I'd prefer him to be like Jerry Rice or Marvin Harrison: Just shut up and play. ... The Lions are taking a risk going with Dan Orlovsky as their backup until Jeff Garcia comes back. They're hoping Joey Harrington doesn't get hurt, but they're pretty high on Orlovsky. With questions about Harrington lingering, if (Orlovsky) comes in and performs well, maybe they have their future quarterback. ... Antonio Gates wanted Tony Gonzalez money, but he ain't been Tony Gonzalez yet. Tony has been more productive, and he's a little better blocker. Will Antonio be like Tony? Possibly. But he still doesn't run as fast. ... Reggie Swinton is a good returner, hut he never seems to stay on a roster for any consistent amount of time. That, to me, doesn't make him a complete player. I don't think he'll be the long-term answer for Arizona. ... I'm not surprised the Dolphins demoted A.J. Feeley to the No. 3 quarterback. He's had the hat on his head and hasn't been able to do it. Gus Frerotte is a good journeyman guy who will hopefully help them. But Sage Rosenfels is the interesting guy. He has looked more efficient, from what our guys tell me. It looks like he's got more confidence and is getting the ball out the way they want it done. ... If Lamar Gordon can get back to form, he definitely will add a dimension to the Eagles' running game. He's got a little more size than the two guys in front of him, Brian Westbrook and Ryan Moats. They need that kind of backup who can come in and carry the load-provided he doesn't get injured like he has in the past. ... Based on what he's done the past few years, Hines Ward deserved a new contract. He catches, he blocks, he does it all. Antwaan Randle El should help, but Cedric Wilson didn't look that good to me in the preseason. So the Steelers need Hines as their main guy.
