Breaking down Nebraska's option

Sporting News, The, Sept 30, 2002 by Artie Gigantinos

Nebraska is one of few teams that uses the option as its base offense. If the Huskers are to remain a threat in the Big 12, they will need to begin operating it better, starting this week vs. North Division foe Iowa State.

The trick to executing an option offense is to run the play to a side of the defense where you can outnumber the defenders at the point of attack. When watching Nebraska, notice the course of the fullback and quarterback. They start plays on a certain course, then bend that course to the designated play.

The key to stopping the option is to defend from the inside out: Stop the fullback first, the quarterback second and the pitch third. If the offense has to pitch the ball every play, the defense is doing its job.

Fox college football analyst Artie Gigantino is a former NFL assistant and Division I defensive coordinator.
