Top five: defensive rookies in 2004

Vinnie Iyer

1 Sean Taylor, FS, Redskins. Taylor has cornerback-like ability in coverage and linebacker-like strength in run support. He will allow coordinator Gregg Williams to be creative with aggressive schemes.

2 Vince Wilfork, NT, Patriots. Ted Washington's free-agent departure created a huge void for New England, and the 325-pound Wilfork forms a powerful nose tackle rotation with veteran Keith Traylor.

3 Kenechi Udeze, DE, Vikings. He already has become the Vikings' best outside pass rusher. When he works next to explosive second-year tackle Kevin Williams, Udeze should get one-on-one opportunities.

4 Jason Babin, OLB, Texans. The ideal edge rusher in Houston's 3-4, Babin is quick getting upfield and can handle me run. He'll grow up fast in a seasoned unit that includes Kailee Wong, Jay Foreman and Jamie Sharper.

5 Daryl Smith, SLB, Jaguars. Smith played the middle in college, but his instincts make him better suited to shine on the strong side behind Jacksonville's stout front four.
