Dream week: September 22-28

Sporting News, The,  Sept 30, 2005

THURSDAY, 9/22

Mariners at Blue Jays

Attendance isn't what it used to be at the Rogers Centre. In a desperate attempt to draw fans, the Jays offer 2-for-1 night: Pay to see one underachieving, overpaid third baseman (Corey Koskie) and watch a second (Adrian Beltre) for no extra charge.

FRIDAY, 9/23

Marlins at Braves

Let's see, the past three World Series champions were wild cards, and Florida has twice won it all as the wild card. Finally realizing his decadelong mistake and hoping it isn't too late to lose the division, Braves manager Bobby Cox decides to start Dan Kolb and re-sign Raul Mondesi to play center field.

Giants at Rockies

Let me get this straight: Barry Bonds returns in time for seven games against the Padres, whom he has battered like no other team in his career, and also manages to squeeze in a series at Coors Field? Plus, he has Pedro Gomez carrying his bags? Nice deal.

SUNDAY, 9/25

Red Sox at Orioles

This game is meaningless, but we're holding out hope the final series between the two teams will reignite the Magglio Ordonez-Ozzie Guillen feud. Ordonez is hitting .571 in six games against Chicago this season, though he has only one extra-base hit and one RBI.

MONDAY, 9/26

Angel's at A's

After six months of games and 15 head-to-head matchups (Oakland leads the season series, 8-7), the teams will meet four times this week to decide the A.L. West. We all remember Francisco Rodriguez's infamous drop the last time the teams played in Oakland, but A's closer Huston Street has had no such problems with LA. He is 1-0 with four saves and is averaging better than a strikeout per inning against the Angels this season.

TUESDAY, 9/27

White Sox at Tigers

Why is Bobby Valentine sitting in the stands with his "disguise" on? He senses opportunity. The Pirates sent Lloyd McClendon packing earlier this month, and now the vultures are circling Dusty Baker. This could be the last game Baker manages at Wrigley Field.--Chris Bahr

WEDNESDAY, 9/28

Pirates at Cubs

A sign spotted in the crowd: "Baltimore: The place where 500-home run hitters come to die. See you soon, Manny." An obviously shaken Ramirez responds, "Sammy Sosa died?"
