Do Singletary, Millen have what it takes to run a team?

Sporting News, The, Jan 18, 1999 by Dan Pompei

9. Reggie McGrew, DT, Florida. Might be the first interior lineman selected.

10. Amos Zereoue, RB, West Virginia. Probably the third-best back available.

11. David Boston, WR, Ohio State. Likely will be a late first-round pick, and might have been much higher with another year of school.

12. Brock Huard, QB, Washington. He could get caught up in the quarterback feeding frenzy and get drafted higher than his talent dictates.

13. Kris Farris, OT, UCLA. Stock has dropped some, but still probably is a low first-round pick.

14. Solomon Page, OT, West Virginia. Bolsters a weak group of offensive linemen.

15. Sedrick Irvin, RB, Michigan State. Isn't special enough to be taken real high, but is too productive to last very long.

16. Dre' Bly, CB, North Carolina. Would have been a higher pick last year. --D.P

FRONT OFFICE RUMBLINGS AND LOCKER ROOM WHISPERS FROM DAN POMPEI

The Saints are leaning toward setting Kerry Collins free and trying to replace him by trading for Scott Mitchell. The Lions already are dangling Mitchell around the league. The key is whether coach Mike Ditka and Mitchell can see eye to eye.... One candidate's name you might not have heard in conjunction with head coach openings is Mary Levy. But don't discount the possibility of the former Bills coach returning to the sidelines. Two teams have talked with Levy about their openings, and Levy is open to the possibility of becoming a head coach again. Levy, 73, retired from the Bills last year, but after a year off he feels rejuvenated. Can anyone think of a better unemployed coach? ... The decision of the Oilers/Titans to clear out three assistant coaches last week came directly from upper management, not from coach Jeff Fisher. And sources in the coaching community say another prominent assistant coach on the staff also was told he was fired, only to be told later he was still employed.... Sources close to the Panthers say there was some friction over the way fired assistant coaches were dealt with by team owner Jerry Richardson. The Panthers offered to pay for the coaches' hotel rooms for only one night at the Senior Bowl, instead of several nights, which is customary. Assistants also were denied tickets to the Super Bowl they felt they had coming. Former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had words with Richardson on his way out the door.... And you'll never guess which team is treating its fired assistants with class and respect: Jeff Lurie's Eagles.... Dave Wannstedt beat Mike Holmgren only once in 12 games when they were running the Bears and Packers, respectively, but Holmgren still thought highly enough of his former NFC Central rival to have interest in making Wannstedt his defensive coordinator with the Seahawks. But Fritz Shurmur, Holmgren's defensive coordinator in Green Bay, had first dibs on the job.... The Browns are concerned that Vikings offensive coordinator Brian Billick may be swayed from taking the Browns' head coaching job by Bill Walsh, whose relationship with Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark is less than ideal. Billick is a Walsh disciple.
