Mike DeCourcy's 3 questions

Sporting News, The,  Jan 21, 2005

1 Where will you be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET? If you're anywhere other than Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C., it better be in front of your TV. North Carolina at Wake Forest won't be the only great ACC game. It might not be the best of the league's regular season, but it will be the only time the two teams with the best championship ingredients meet. It will not be inconsequential.

2 Why does John Chaney do this to his team? Temple has proved capable of pushing Duke, Wake Forest and Alabama to their limits. It just doesn't make sense to play them all. The Owls were 5-6 with a team that could have been 8-3 or 9-2. Some teams lose confidence and can't find ways to win when every game is a killer. Temple has spent too much of this decade ranked high only in schedule strength.

3 Why do so many people obsess over missed free throws? Fans, reporters and talk-show hosts waste hours agonizing over this subject. They all might be surprised to learn the top 10 teams in free throw percentage as of January 1 had a combined record of 46-47. Among those making foul shots and playing foul basketball were Duquesne, Army and Stetson. How many attempts a team gets from the line is a far more important indicator of success.
